Why You Can Throw 300 Feet, But Can't Throw 90 MPH

I remember being in high school and hearing for the first time, "if you can throw a baseball 300' you can throw 90 mph". I couldn't be more excited because I knew I was close to that, so that must of meant I was going to throw 90 very soon!

Sure enough, I was able to throw a baseball 300+ feet by the end of high school, but was only throwing 80-83 mph.

So, why didn't I throw 90?

  1. I didn't have the same intent to throw the ball hard on the mound

  2. I was more focused on "mechanics" than being athletic like I was in long toss

  3. I didn't practice throwing hard on the mound

  4. I spent too much time on flat ground instead of the slope

  5. I didn't use a radar gun for consistent feedback on how I was doing

Looking back, I have the cliché thought of, "if I knew then what I know now, I would have been so much better". Everyone has these moments and hopefully often as we continue to push our knowledge.

Let me save you some of the headache and frustration I went through with a few tips.

  1. Have high intensity days in your program and use a radar gun for feedback

  2. Blend shuffle throws and delivery throws on the mound

  3. Spend more time on the mound with your drills

The bad news is there is unlimited information online on how to train.

It can be confusing and difficult to decide who and what is right.

At the end of the day my philosophy and belief is simple. I want to help you become the best player or coach you can be. That doesn't mean I get it right every time. What it does mean is I am dedicated to helping you achieve your goals and doing my best to improve your game where it matters most, on the field.
