To add velocity, first throw slower. Wait, what?

Have you ever noticed that you throw almost the same speed at 80-90% effort as you do at 100% effort?

Why is that?

For some players, the missing ingredient to adding a couple miles per hour quickly is by increasing their intensity. Have you ever heard of the saying, to throw harder, try throwing harder?

While this can be an important element, I believe we have to slow down sometimes in order to go faster.

Huh?

Let me explain.

The reason you throw close to your max speed at a lower intensity is because you are LOOSE and sequence better. Throwing at a high level requires rhythm and flow. When we try throwing as hard as we possibly can, we lose that.

Try this in your next bullpen.

For your first 5-10 pitches I want you to go at 70-80% effort and to purely focus on how loose and flowy you can be. Think about your hand being a whip and accelerating late.

Let the body deliver the arm. Rhythm and tempo down the mound.

For the next 5-10 pitches I want you to add 1-2 mph each throw. Nothing changes other than a slight increase in tempo down the mound.

While this will put you in a better position with your current skillset, there is still more in the tank.

Are you willing to put in the work to improve your delivery? By moving better down the mound you will throw harder and healthier.

How great does that sound?
