Adjusting Goals In-Season

For high school and college baseball teams, this is about the half-way point in the season.

How are things going?

Are you accomplishing what you wanted? Overachieving? Underachieving?

No matter how good or bad your season has gone to this point, it is important to continue striving to improve.

What I want to talk about is how to set appropriate goals and how you can finish your season strong.

Goal setting

The first thing with goals is they need to be attainable and process oriented. A good process will lead to good results. Focus on what you have control over. Your goals can still be statistically based, but use stats that are more in your control.

Good examples:

  • First Pitch Strikes

  • Ahead %

  • Pitch Usage

  • Strike %

  • Walks

  • Velocity or Movement

  • Mechanical Improvements

Focus on 1-2 things that you think will have the biggest impact. Write down your goals and track your progress each outing.

After deciding what your goals are, create a plan to achieve them. It’s great that you have goals, but without a plan to improve, it is just wishful thinking.

Finish strong

Just because it’s the season, it doesn’t mean you can’t work on things. Continue to be process oriented and strive towards achieving your goals.

Maybe you haven’t pitched much this season. If that is you, there is a great opportunity to work on things. Don’t let your frustration of not pitching keep you from working on things. Have a plan to work on the parts of your game that are lacking. Talk to your coach about the areas you need to improve in order to pitch more.

Continue pushing yourself to improve and finish the season strong.

Enjoy the Process,

Jared
